In a server room far, far away...

I’m sure it has been brought up before, but something occurred to me while watching Empire Strikes Back with my son… that is the story of Notes against Microsoft has many similarities, and characters to the story of the Rebel Alliance against the Galactic Empire. (more)

I see Notes 8 as being Luke Skywalker, the hopes of all rebels are resting on his young shoulders being able to take on The Dark Side and seal a conclusive victory, thus ending the reign of The Emperor. I’m sure you can all guess who would be cast as the head of the empire, and the casting of Darth Vader makes me smile too. The “Chosen One of Notes” in days gone by, he was seduced by The Dark Side and emerged in a prominent position by the side of The Emperor. I wonder what Mr Ozzie wears to fancy dress parties.

Anyway, the point being that this analogy can easily be transferred into any company to represent how securely Notes sits within the organisation, with all the other platforms and many managers trying to elbow it out. My last employer was pretty much in a Phantom Menace situation while I was there, where Notes was used extensively but the key application in Notes was old and tired and it was a relatively easy decision when another solution seduced the managers. By the time I left to join Teamstudio my old organisation were at the Clone Wars stage and I’ve since learned that they are now at the end of the Revenge Of The Sith stage with Notes hanging on by its fingertips.

I think that for them, A New Hope is unlikely but, if any of this mirrors your organisation, then you have a chance to be old Ben Kenobi or even Luke Skywalker, and force Notes back into the consciousness of those in charge as a key collaboration application platform. By addressing quality, control and performance issues you can influence how users and managers perceive Notes. Getting started and deciding on priorities can be daunting and difficult, but that is where this blog and the Notes community can help and before you know it you’ll be having a party in the forest with a bunch of short, furry muppets doing the wookie shuffle celebrating the end of the threat to your Notes infrastructure by the dark side!

Gravatar Image1 - Great read.

I just found this site and am at a loss for words. Finally a Domino site that speaks to (at least my) real world issues and concerns.

There is no "general feedback" for this site, so this may not be the appropriate place to comment, but comment I must. Kudos all around. Great content. Great discussion. Great....

Keep it up.

Cheers

Gravatar Image2 - Since when is Star Wars "real world"? Emoticon

Gravatar Image3 - I could not think of a more apt analogy to my own situation. Unfortunately, I think that means I'm Mace Windu, circa Episode III... I sense a plot to destroy the Jedi... Anyone seen that Anakin kid?...
